About Our Program

Our composting facility, in its current state, represents a thirty-year partnership between the University Grounds Division and the UGA College of Agriculture. Since 1983, the University of Georgia has reclaimed 100% of its leaf and limb debris as compost. The University Vet School and other animal research facilities has sent up to 95 tons of animal bedding to the compost facility each month.

Traditional recycling efforts include paper and bottle/can bins located in each of the 380 buildings on campus and in several outside areas on the campus. The University recycles about 1,000 tons of mixed paper, cardboard, bottles and cans each year.

Desk-side paper recycling boxes
are available by calling 542-3152.

Office paper is collected in 64-gallon roll carts from each building on a weekly basis.

Glutton recycling containers
are available for indoor areas.

The University offers drop off bins for paper and bottles/cans in 10 locations.
Dumpsters are available to large generators of cardboard on an as-needed basis.
For information, call 542-3152
Indoor bottle and can containers are available for collection in break rooms and areas where drinks are consumed.

The University community generates an enormous amount of waste each day. Without recycling, all of this waste would be deposited into the local municipal landfill that has about five years of remaining capacity (at current average disposal rates).

For year 2007, the Athens-Clarke County Materials Recycling Facility reports acceptance of 1147.66 tons of recyclables. The facility processes materials in two recycling streams, with our tonnage broken down thusly:

comingled bottles and cans: 66.01 tons
mixed paper: 56.71 tons
cardboard: 230.11 tons
office paper: 794.83 tons

For year 2007, the total waste generated by the University was 8,258.07 tons, of which
2,293.14 tons were recycled. This represents a 28% recycling rate for all generated waste.

Since 2001, our overall recycling program, including paper, cardboard, bottles & cans and glass has produced a substantial cost avoidance of $196,645.46 in landfill tipping fees ($34 per ton).

What About Ink Cartridges, Batteries, & Cell Phones?

Inkjet cartridges, batteries, & personal cell phone recycling is now available on campus.  Departments can request an ink jet cartridge collection box or box pick-ups by emailing recycle@uga.edu.  Regular alkaline batteries can be discarded with regular waste, however rechargeable and non-alkaline batteries can be recycled through our Building Services Workers.

This is a campus-wide solution and should be used by all departments.   The national percentage for recycling empty printer cartridges is only 5%.  We believe we can do much better than that.

If you would like to participate, but feel that your department will not produce enough inkjet cartridges, the cartridges can be placed inside of a plastic bag and mailed via inter-campus mail.  Mail to:
