UGA and other SEC Schools participate in the 2008 Recyclemania Competition.
Recyclemania is a 10 week recycling competition that began in 2001 and has grown tremendously to become the premier college and university recycling competition in the country. In 2007 more than 200 colleges and universities competed and over the 10 weeks of competition more than 41 million pounds of material were recycled by competing schools. Recyclemania is supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's WasteWise program and the National Recycling Coalition (NRC).
Since the kickoff of the 2008 Recyclemania competition on January 27, 2008 and the North Campus pilot recycling and green cleaning programs, Physical Plant Support Services Department has collected almost 8,000 pounds of recycled bottles and cans. University housing has contributed over 6,500 pounds of recycled bottles and cans during the first five weeks of the competition with the Myers Community leading with over 1,170 pounds.
In addition, the campus as a whole has contributed almost 350,000 pounds of recycled material which includes recycled bottles & cans, as well as paper and corrugated cardboard. Sixteen buildings have been converted to green cleaning.
The University of Georgia entered the national Recyclemania competition for the first time in 2008 and currently places second for the “Gorilla Prize” within the competition. The Gorilla Prize honors the school that recycles the highest gross tonnage of materials during the ten-week competition, regardless of campus population. In this category the University of Georgia’s ranking is among 58 other campuses in the U.S.
Events sponsored by the Physical Plant Environmental Sustainability Committee include the March 19th "Power of One" forum (this will be an interactive forum to address how individual behaviors impact the environment, as well the advancement of sustainable initiatives in their community. Hosted by the Go Green Alliance), "Clean Out Your Files Day" on March 28, 2008 and Earth Day on April 22, 2008 (also hosted by the Go Green Alliance) held at the Tate Center Plaza.
The Recyclemania competition officially ends April 5, 2008.
